Just days after what would have been Tupac Shakur’s 52nd birthday, police have announced they issued a search warrant at a home in Henderson, Nevada, a city that sits under 20 miles outside of Las Vegas, where the rapper was gunned down in 1996.
According to Lt. Jason Johansson of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, “The search warrant that we conducted is in connection with the Tupac Shakur case…It has been a while…It’s a case that’s gone unsolved and hopefully one day we can change that.” As per the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the scene of the warrant appeared to be a tense one, with officers approaching the home with guns drawn. No arrests appeared to have been made.
Tupac Shakur was just 25 when he was murdered in a drive-by shooting in September 1996. Following attending the Mike Tyson-Bruce Seldon bout, Shakur and his driver, Death Row Records co-founder and noted psycho Suge Knight drove down the Las Vegas Strip. It was at a stoplight that a car pulled up and fired numerous times, hitting Shakur four times. After a short stint in the hospital, Shakur succumbed to the attack. Less than one year later, former Shakur associate Christopher Wallace aka the Notorious B.I.G. was also gunned down in a drive-by shooting, which many believe to have been a revenge killing, with none other than Suge Knight a primary suspect.
While many theories – plenty of the conspiratorial type – have come out about the murders, no one has ever been officially charged even a quarter-century after the murder of either Tupac Shakur or the Notorious B.I.G. In 2003, the documentary Tupac: Resurrection was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. In addition to being one of the most heralded rap artists ever, Shakur also had a steady movie career, first appearing in a musical role in 1991’s Nothing But Trouble and later earning acclaim for his turn in 1993’s Poetic Justice. He has been portrayed on the big screen numerous times in movies like Notorious (Anthony Mackie), Straight Outta Compton (Marcc Rose) and the dreadful biopic All Eyez on Me (Demetrius Shipp Jr.).
