There’s no way around it — we are deep into the dog days of summer. The blockbusters are behind us, and the movies for the next few weeks are probably gonna be a little lower-key (if not uninteresting) until the fall movie season kicks off the weekend after Labor Day. But, as always, the fall season is jam-packed with films, ranging from would-be blockbusters to potential Oscar films. But which one are you most looking forward to?
To me, there are a few really good ones to keep an eye on, but these are my five most anticipated:
Digger: Tom Cruise is back with perhaps his most ambitious acting job in many years, with him nearly unrecognizable under layers of makeup in Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s ambitious doomsday comedy, which strikes me as almost Stanley Kubrick-like. It’s a big gamble, though. It could be genius, or it could be a disaster.
Street Fighter: As a teen, Super Street Fighter II was my all-time favorite video game. I loved playing it in the arcade, and when I got it on Sega Genesis, I was able to beat the game with every character, although it was always more fun playing with friends. Paramount’s nineties-set adaptation looks like a blast — but either way, it has to be better than the JCVD version, right?
Resident Evil: I have high hopes for Zach Cregger’s big-budget video game adaptation. Normally, I’d have no interest in a film like this — it’s really Cregger being the director that makes the difference. I fully expect him to make something unreal.
Dune: Part Three: Denis Villeneuve returns with his epic trilogy capper. Villeneuve’s one of the greatest directors of his time, with this being his last stop before rebooting James Bond. Plus, that extended ten-minute preview they’ve been playing before The Odyssey is terrific.
Avengers: Doomsday: I’m not the biggest Marvel fan, and I’ll admit that it’s unlikely I’m going to like this movie more than others I’m not even listing here, like Robert Eggers’ Werwulf. But the scale and ambition of this thing are nuts, and I’m fascinated by how huge the cast is and how everyone is going to be squeezed in. And, honestly, is anyone reading this NOT planning to see it?
