We’ve been hearing the rumblings about a “Preacher” series being made at AMC for a long while now, giving fans of the comic series hope that a proper adaptation was finally in the offing. Only a handful of months ago, Seth Rogen and his partner Evan Goldberg’s names first popped up in conjunction with the adaptation, breathing even more life into the project, but still not making it official.

Today, the news has been made official.

AMC and Sony Pictures Television have closed a deal to develop Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s 1990s comic book into a dramatic series. Rogen and Goldberg are among the writers and producers; former “Breaking Bad” executive producer Sam Catlin will serve as “Preacher’s” showrunner.

PREACHER follows Jesse Custer, a reverend who has learned that God has left Heaven and abandoned His responsibilities. He finds himself the only person capable of tracking God down, demanding answers, and making Him answer for His dereliction of duty. Accompanying Jesse on his journey is his former girlfriend and a friendly vampire who seems to prefer a pint in the pub to the blood of the innocent. On his tail is an immortal, unstoppable killing machine named the Saint of Killers – a western lone gunman archetype whose sole purpose is to hunt and kill Jesse.

Original Films’ Neal Moritz and Vivian Cannon also executive producing.

“Preacher” has been struggling to make its debut on the screen – big and small – since the late 90s. Among the more recent attempts: Sam Mendes (SKYFALL) was once attached to direct a feature version for Columbia Pictures, while Mark Steven Johnson (DAREDEVIL) developed it at HBO for a spell, obviously to no avail.
