I remain cautiously optimistic (or is it pessimistically enthusiastic?) about the Robert Rodriguez-produced, Nimrod Antal-directed PREDATORS, which is in pre-production right now in Austin, Texas. I want to believe that it will bring back the spirit of the John McTiernan film (hell, I’ll even take the spirit of PREDATOR 2), and erode the stinking memories of the ALIEN VS. PREDATOR films, but I’m just too jaded (and not a big enough Rodriguez fan) to get my hopes up high.
One bit of encouraging news comes at us via Moviehole today; the site recently caught up with make-up maestro Howard Berger in Australia as he works on the new CHRONICLES OF NARNIA flick, and he spoke a little about what he has in mind when it comes to the hulking, dreadlocked monsters we all know and love.
“We wanted to have the Predator look as it did in the original film. We went back and looked at the original. I actually worked in the shop with Stan Winston on the first film. It was great to be able to go back to the series having not been involved in any of the sequels, and it was also great to be able to make sure we built them as Stan Winston did.”
He goes on to tease: “There’s a whole bunch of cool [Predator’s] in the film…”
Pretty cool, no? It’s not like I have a huge problem with the way the predators looked in the AVP films (when I can see them anyway – those movies were apparently lit by glow-sticks) but at least we know there will be a little Stan Winston in this one; the great, late man was not a part of the AVP flicks.
For the entire interview with Berger, head on over HERE.
PREDATORS is scheduled to open in July of 2010.
