Premature Preacher

Empire Online has an amusing little article with Sam Mendes, who you’ll recall was recently announced – via Variety – as the director of the long-awaited (by some) film adaption of Garth Ennis’ PREACHER comic book. Well, looks like we were all getting a little ahead of ourselves…

“I’d love to make Preacher… But there’s no script.”

He continues: “This is a typical Variety announcement… Mendes to direct Preacher’ – I wish! Basically they should have written, ‘Mendes in development with Preacher’. What I’m doing is, I’ve gotta find a script. I’ve just got to get it written.”

Variety always has a habit of doing this, but even worse, we internet journies have a habit of declaing it the gospel. Look, chances are that Mendes will indeed direct the flick, but it’s obvious that we’re nowhere near a start date yet. At least, not until a screenwriter is announced. Then we can all go crazy about this project again.

Mendes certainly seems excited about the prospect of directing it though. “It’s brilliant, it’s an incredible twisted vision,” he said of the 66-issue story. “There’s so much of it you couldn’t possibly fit it all into one movie. It’s just about what you keep and what you leave out, and how you structure the story. But just to have that toy set again, being able to paint on a big canvas and to say ‘I am gonna do crazy crane shots and massive action sequences again because I want to,’ it’s exciting..”

Meanwhile, Mendes is picking and choosing his projects, owns an Oscar, and bangs Kate Winslet regularly. I think I speak for all of us when I tell him he can go f*ck himself.
