42nd edition of my fav FILM FESTIVAL will be upon us on October 2nd till
October 12 and consider me pumped! Of course I’m rambling about the
SITGES
FILM FESTIVAL that takes place in beautiful Catalonia, Spain.
This year will be another packed one for Sitges. As per the poster you
see on the right; the theme of the Fest will be ALIEN by Ridley Scott (great idea) and
there will be a screening of Scott’s favorite version of the movie (how
many are there anyways) which will be attended by special guests (still to
be determined).
Moreover, Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza will be returning to Sitges with
the mucho anticipated [REC]2 which will open the Festival. What a way
to start! Can’t wait to see that one! Now the full program has yet to be
released but here’s a tease of this year’s line-up. The OFFICIAL FANTÀSTIC
SELECTION will include: Thirst, Crows II, Grace,
Surrogates and Moon.
MIDNIGHT X-TREME will offer films like: Best Worst Movie (about
Troll 2), Dead Snow, Lesbian Vampire Killers, Black
Dynamite, and Smash Cut.
Representing Catalan and Spanish cinema are Orphan by director Jaume
Collet-Serra, and Ingrid, by Eduard Cortés. Also expect films like
The Countess, by Julie Delpy and Ne te retourne pas, by Marina de
Van, starring the hotter than hot Monica Belluci and Sophie Marceau.
Animation will be in the house too. I’m talking: the Swedish Metropia,
by Tarik Saleh, and the French box office smash Lascars. In NOVES
VISIONS we got the Australian Van Diemen’s Land, by Jonathan Auf Der
Heide; The Forbidden Door, and the brutal English flick Bronson,
by Nicolas Winding Refn.
ORIENT EXPRESS will include, among others: Goemon, by
Kazuaki Kiriya, and IP Man, by Wilson Yip, featuring the GREAT Donnie
Yen. 3D FILM will be one of the most important new additions to SITGES 09,
with screenings like The Final Destination kicking in.
And SEVEN CHANCES will be showing films like Youth Without Youth, by
Francis Ford Coppola, or La Maison Nucingen, by Raoul Ruiz.
As for tributes, the 30th anniversary of ALIEN aside, SITGES 09 will be
re-visiting the 80’s with special guests in tow. So far we know that an
American cut, unreleased in Spain, of The Shining, with extra footage
will screen; and Craven’s classic A Nightmare on Elm Street will also
get some love with the attendance, among others, of John Saxon.
Clive Barker will be on hand as well to present two movies based on
his novels: Dread and Book of Blood.
Finally; SITGES 09 will also be paying special attention to the zombie
genre, holding a new edition of the Zombie Walk on Saturday, October 10th,
and putting out a tribute to Zombie 2, by Lucio Fulci. Zombie 2 premiered
in Sitges 30 years ago. So there ya have it! Looking damn f*cking good! Tap the
