So alas, I’m not here to talk about the potential JAWS remake. No, no. I’m here to talk about the original film coming at us in 3D! Yes, Steven Spielberg’s iconic 1975 film coming at us in three dimensions. If JAWS producer Richard D. Zanuck has his way that just might happen! The super-producer recently sat down with with the LA Times and happened to let loose on the prospect of adding computer generated effects to the classic film:
“In desperation, we came up with so many good ideas [for JAWS] — like the floating barrels, for instance, that were shown on the screen to suggest this shark beneath them, underwater — and we did it because we didn’t have the shark. In the script, the shark is on Page 1 when the girl gets eaten. It became more terrorizing than anything we could have hoped for. If we had CG then we would have had the shark in every frame.”
The first moment we see that Great White is one of the greatest moments in film. Agreed? So why in the world would you want to throw that son of a b*tch into every frame? I suppose we’re talking about the mighty dollar here folks. With creature features making a decent comeback and 3D dominating Hollywood right now, I wouldn’t be surprised if this JAWS in 3D happens sooner rather than later. Especially if Alexandre Aja’s PIRANHA 3D is successful, which is a very high possibility.
The LA Times note that Zanuck and Spielberg had thrown around the idea of updating JAWS a few years ago but nothing happened. They also mention that Zanuck has once again become intrigued about adding 3D effects to the film and re-releasing it in theaters. Mind you, this is not even close to being a done deal. It’s actually not even a potential deal at this point. This is basically just Zanuck rattling off thoughts in his brain… but in today’s Hollywood I wouldn’t be surprised one bit if this actually happens.
