Punisher co-creator wants a female Alfred in Matt Reeves’ The Batman

While plenty of bat-fans have been posting their ideas as to which villains Robert Pattison's Caped Crusader could face in Matt Reeves' THE BATMAN, Punisher co-creator Gerry Conway as been giving some careful thought to who could play Alfred, Bruce Wayne's beloved butler and confidant, in the highly-anticipated film.

Conway took to Twitter late last week, and made a bold suggestion about who he thinks should arrive as the Waynes' doting and debonair caretaker. Rather than suggest an aging male actor for the part, Conway says that he thinks it's time for the Alfred character to experience a gender-swap, landing someone like DOWNTON ABBEY's Maggie Smith in the role.

Two days after placing Smith's feathered hat in the ring as a dream-contender, Conway's suggestion garnered more than 19,000 likes, signaling that an impressive number of fans are perhaps open to the idea. Later, while continuing his tweetstorm, Conway tagged Reeves in his popular thread, saying that the WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES helmer can simply refer to a female Alfred as "Pennyworth." No first name. No Ms., Mam, or Mrs. Just Pennyworth.

With Conway's tweet making the rounds, it was only a matter of time before other users of the social platform were game for offering their own suggestions for a female Alfred. One user suggested Judi Dench for the part, while others suggested esteemed actresses like Olivia Colman, Helen Mirren, and one of my personal favorites, GAME OF THRONES' Diana Rigg.

Just for fun, if Alfred were to be cast as a female in Matt Reeves' THE BATMAN, who do you think would be a great fit for the part? Let us know in the comments section below.

THE BATMAN is set to swoop into theaters on June 25, 2021.
