So, with what sounds like an SNL skit (and not a particularly imaginative one either), it seems like we're this close to getting an R-rated Quentin Tarantino-directed STAR TREK film!
According to Deadline, Tarantino met with J.J. Abrams about potentially directing the film, with the rating as the major stipulation to him coming on board. Once Abrams and Paramount agreed to the stipulation, Tarantino then met with three other writers – Mark L. Smith, Lindsey Beer, and Drew Pearce – to help flesh out and develop his idea, with one of them in line to take over writing duties while he focuses on directing. Which might be a first for Tarantino, unless you count his "guest-directed" scene in SIN CITY, or his stints on CSI and ER.
Now, I don't know how I feel about this. Obviously, on the one hand, Tarantino is a great director, and I imagine the idea he came up with must've been great for Abrams to abandon the original sequel idea (involving Chris Pine's Kirk meeting up with his father from the first film). On the other, does STAR TREK really need to be R-rated? Do we really need another gritty deconstruction of a beloved, usually hopeful property (especially since DISCOVERY is already doing that?) Or, even if it remains hopeful and not a deconstruction, I don't know what the R-rating helps in that case. However, if you're going to have Tarantino on, might as well as not hamstring his creativity. I am definitely interested to see how this turns out.
