We have some updates on a few upcoming flicks that you might want to take note of. Looks as though not all distributors are pussying-out going the PG-13 route, but by releasing some phat action horror with a couple of R ratings.
CONSTANTINE, the Keanu Reeves flick based on the HELLBLAZER comic book about a hell-battling detective, got slapped with an R rating by the MPAA for “violence and demonic images”. Despite all the mixed reviews, if it doesn’t hold back on the violence, you know it gots to be awesome (at least on an entertainment level).
Big surprise that Rob Zombies HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES follow-up THE DEVIL’S REJECTS has also been given the R rating- apparently they didn’t even have to cut out all that much (unlike CORPSES). They thought they’d get the dreaded NC-17 before they’d have to go back and trim it down- but they didn’t. Either the MPAA is getting looser on it’s rating scale (yeah right!), or REJECTS isn’t going to be as savage as it claims to be.
There’s also been a release change, and it’s hard to tell if it’s for the better… or for the worse. Dark Castle’s remake of HOUSE OF WAX, first slated for Halloween 2004 release, then pushed back to April 29th 2005, is now being pushed back yet again, this time to compete against Lions Gate’s NC-17 HIGH TENSION on June 3rd.
Maybe they’re banking on the fact that not everyone will be able to get into TENSION due to the rating, so why not capitalize on their thirst for horror, and release a flick everyone can get into. That, or what most of us have been thinking- the movie just plain sucks, and they keep moving it back because they know it. Who knows whether they’ll keep the June date, or knock it back once again to Halloween 2005….
CONSTANTINE hits theaters February 18th, THE DEVIL’S REJECTS is currently slated for an August 12th release, and HOUSE OF WAX will go against HIGH TENSION June 3rd- let the battle begin!
