Ray talks Kong

Now Playing had a chance to talk with special effects legend Ray Harryhausen about his upcomig tribute two-disc DVD RAY HARRYHAUSEN: THE EARLY YEARS.

He discusses a number of things, including his thoughts on CGI and Peter Jackson’s upcoming KING KONG. Here’s what he had to say:

“I know Peter Jackson and I think he’ll do a good job. There will always only be one King Kong, it was such a unique production. Dino De Laurentiis’s [1976] interpretation, he left all the fantasy out. He thought the only thing that made King Kong popular was the girl and the ape, and that’s not true. The original had so much fantasy and the whole thing hinges on fantasy. [But Jackson’s] in love with the subject as much as I am. He’ll do a good job.”

When a legend like Harryhausen is behind a film like the remake of KING KONG, you know it’s gonna be good. Not that I would every doubt Jackson, I’ve been behind the guy since day one (BAD TASTE… awesome film!), but sometimes it seems the bigger the budget, the bigger hype… the bigger piece of shit the film turns out to be.
