Red Band trailer for David Ayer’s End of Watch with Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena

Director David Ayer (TRAINING DAY, HARSH TIMES) has got a knack for showing the gritty underbelly of the cops/crooks world and it looks like he’s following suit with his latest genre entry, END OF WATCH.  Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Pena, Anna Kendrick, Frank Grillo, and America Ferrera, the film tracks the lives of all involved via POV style cameras, attempting to give it a voyeuristic feel.  Today, we have a look at the red-band trailer for the film, which is branded as such mostly from the F-bombage dropped throughout.

Check it:

I’m a fan of Ayer’s work, with TRAINING DAY being one of my all-time favorite films.  I think both STREET KINGS and HARSH TIMES are grossly underrated as well.  However, I’m not sold on this whole POV concept for END OF WATCH.  Usually when something feels like a gimmick it comes off as one.  It can oftentimes distract from the enjoyment of the film, but hopefully Ayer proves me wrong and puts out another quality product.  It’s Gyllenhaal who needs the hit the most, as he’s got the chops to deliver, but just hasn’t found sure footing yet.

Here’s the synopsis:

A powerful story of family, friendship, love, honor and courage, End Of Watch stars Academy Award(R) nominee Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena as young Los Angeles police officers Taylor and Zavala as they patrol the city’s meanest streets of south central Los Angeles. Giving the story a gripping, first-person immediacy, the action unfolds through footage from the handheld HD cameras of the police officers, gang members, surveillance cameras, and citizens caught in the line of fire to create a riveting portrait of the city’s most dangerous corners, the cops who risk their lives there every day, and the price they and their families are forced to pay.

END OF WATCH opens on September 28, 2012.
