Once or twice a year, without fail, we hear news of a new MAD MAX movie. Sometimes it has Mel Gibson attached, sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes George Miller is definitely directing it, sometimes he’s not involved at all. And while I don’t necessarily see the need (or box-office potential) for a new MAX, I can’t lie and say I wouldn’t follow it closely if it ever did go into production.
Well maybe, just maybe, it’s close to really happening… Jeremy Renner, star of the highly-regarded bomb squad flick THE HURT LOCKER, is apparently in the mix for a new MAX. In an interview with “The Modesto Bee” (always known for their amazing scoops), Renner has this to say about his upcoming projects: I’m also fighting to do the new Mad Max film with George Miller. That might be next summer. I’m screen-testing and meeting George Miller.
Unfortunately, the “Bee” doesn’t follow up on this, so no clue whether Renner is talking about just participating in the flick, or actually playing “Max”. (At last check, Mel wasn’t part of the franchise anymore.) Hopefully we’ll hear more from Mr. Renner about this development in the near future.
Meanwhile, I’ve got to see THE HURT LOCKER, because everyone says it’s… wait for it… the bomb. Woo!
