ARROW INTRO: My short film
THE RED HOURS
will premiere in competition at this year’s SITGES FILM FESTIVAL
(see its Fest page here) which is good news
to me and everybody who was involved in the film. We couldn’t be happier!
Screening dates/times are on: Oct 06/17:15 at the Sala Tramuntana and on
Oct 08/18:00 at the Auditori Melià. So in light of its first showing, we’ll
be sharing cast and crew diaries with yall, giving ya insight as to the
shoot and the people behind it.
DEKE RICHARDS

There’s a hottie behind me right?
DEKE RICHARDS:
Having never been to
LAFAYETTE, LOUISINA I must say that coming to this fine city for the first
time was a real treat! It reminded of the best of Australia my birth place
scenic wise, and the best of Quebec my home province, language wise due to
all the French signs and connecting history. Southern hospitality was no
joke here having been accommodated by Donny Broussard (the most enthusiastic
and hippest D.O.P. I ever met and worked with) and his family whose wife
cooked some mean Cajun dishes that I will never forget! Many thanks Pam!

With
all that said the biggest thrill of all was being featured in John Fallon’s
THE RED HOURS which was the real high!! Most of the shoot was like a big
roller coaster ride that never stopped! I mean we were going at it all day
and night! Shooting itself had commenced in the early morning (as it always
usually does), wrapping in the late day or early evening. Like DEADEN, it
was a big team-effort where we would all help in taking the equipment to one
location to another giving that real hands on to the film which is always
quite motivating. At night it was all prepping for the next day with of
course a nice stiff drink in hand which is also quite motivating as well!! I
must say John Fallon was quite the work-horse during this entire shoot
wearing many hats. Donny and AD David Lawson were
on fire too.

The
other thrill of course was all the hands on stunts that I had to perform
which I must say definitely challenged me in making each shot a one take
wonder (and keeping in constant shape)! For example I had chainsaws, axes,
snakes (that was my own thing) and hot women thrown my way — the scenes
with my “Better Half’s” for that matter were certainly keeping me on my feet
for all the right reasons as well! Of all biggest accomplishments were the
tough emotional scenes which I must say I was happy to have put myself
through. As an actor you could not have asked for better in terms of
stretching ones skills. I mean I had anger, sadness, joy, fear, and a big
adrenaline rush all in a 7-10 day shoot! Nothing thrown my way as an actor
will be tough after this film!

Last
but not least out of all the pleasant surprises was working with the local
actors and crew who were second to none in enthusiasm as well as in their
skills! Killian Williams on special effects blew my mind in terms of what
this dude can do with nothing! Working with Amy my co-star was a treat as
well, she was a real pro and did not think twice of putting herself through
the emotional ringer! And to make it even better: It was her first film
ever! Whatever you have Amy keep it up! You were the best actress I ever
worked with! That’s only between us though.

HEATHER WESTWOOD:
Working on“The Red Hours” set was a great treat for me. I was pulling
double duty, working on another set at the same time, which made for a
couple of 22 hour long days. But getting beat up & dirty kept me sane
through the whole thing! I love working with these guys- John, Donny, Dave,
Matt and Killian who I’ve worked with in the past and Deke and Amy who I met
this time around. All amazingly creative and damn good at what they
do. What can I say about “The Red Hours”? It’s a mind trip. It’s bloody. I
kicked some ass.Women are evil. It’ll rip your heart out. Can’t wait to
taste more.
