Rian Johnson posts pic announcing shooting has begun on Knives Out

Rian Johnson has taken a smidgen of – or dare I say even a tad bit of – heat for his work on STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI, but that movie is in the can and up for viewing and discussion for all of time. Now the director is looking to the future and has taken to social media to post the first pic from the set of his latest project – KNIVES OUT – and announcing that shooting has begun on the new thriller.

Not much is known about the movie, other than it will be a modern update on the classic whodunit murder mystery – which probably makes some recall his work playing with the detective noir genre with BRICK. What we do know is that KNIVES has one helluva cast, including Chris Evans, Daniel Craig, Jamie Lee Curtis, Lakeith Stanfield, Michael Shannon, Ana de Armas and the one and only Don Johnson.

Craig was the first to be announced as part of the cast back in September, and then it was reported Johnson would be doing his own version of an Agatha Christie-style mystery, and that Craig would be his Hercule Poirot character. "He’s an actor of extraordinary range, and we are looking forward to the fun of finding that modern detective, and collaborating with Daniel on creating a new Poirot,” Johnson said.

Two of Johnson's other non-THE LAST JEDI movies, BRICK and LOOPER, are two wildly original and fantastic movies that played around with worn genres and tropes, so I'm eager to see how he brings those same stylings to something like a Christie-type mystery movie. That cast is something else, so with them on board this movie has certainly become something to look out for, and now that it's started shooting I will be waiting on pins and needles for the day we can watch it on the big screen.

KNIVES OUT is aiming for a 2019 release.
