Rick Springfield has joined the cast of True Detective’s second season

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

In your WTF casting news of the week, 80s one-hit wonder (okay maybe 3 hit wonder) and actor Rick Springfield has joined the cast of TRUE DETECTIVE for the second season. Joining the already set main stars in Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Taylor Kitsch, Kelly Reilly, and Rachel McAdams, Springfield’s role is currently unknown. We don’t have any idea how large or small his part will be, just who he will be sharing screen time with, thanks to a tweet from the actor.

Now, I am not one to mock an 80s icon for making an acting appearance in a project like TRUE DETECTIVE…wait a minute, yes I am! Why in the heck would TRUE DETECTIVE be making stunt casting that will completely take the viewer out of the fictional narrative like this? While I have faith in Nic Pizzolatto, this just seems odd to me.

We know almost nothing about TRUE DETECTIVE’s second season aside from the fact it will be a different city and follow a different cast of characters. Springfield’s tweet indicates he will be working with Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams, both of whom play police officers in the new season. Could Springfield be playing a witness or contact for the investigators? Or could he be a fellow cop? That remains to be seen.

TRUE DETECTIVE’s second season debuts in 2015 on HBO.
