Cinema Confidential posted an interview with THE ISLAND producers Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald that makes it pretty clear that a third RING installment will be coming our way. The focus will be on a smaller bankrolled affair, however.
MacDonald said, “”We’re doing a lower budget, almost going back to [the] original in a way. Not in story, but in scale.” Hmmm, do I smell direct-to-DVD? It certainly doesn’t give one confidence that original author Koji Suzuki’s dream of exploring the more complex mythology created in his sequels to THE RING will get a chance to see the light of day.
It’s too bad really, but who wants to blame themselves for an ill-conceived sequel with a crappy premise, when you can just claim the problem was the budget?
FYI – If Suzuki is brought on, or the producers show any actual intent to make a GOOD third entry instead of simply an easy money maker, I will retract all sarcasm used in the previous sentence and offer my humble apologies.
