Rings of Power: Lord of the Rings show claims Prime Video’s highest record for first-day premiere

Streaming platforms are in a rare position where they don’t necessarily have to report their viewing numbers since they are in control of their content and don’t have to answer to sponsors. While, normally, streaming companies would give vague titles for some content as being “most watched” or “highest trending,” for the first time, Amazon has revealed the rating for their new Prime show, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. This is in celebration of their newest series’ premiere.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the service has announced that 25 million people have watched the show globally on its first-day release. Comparatively, HBO had boasted that the new Game of Thrones series House of the Dragon had become the company’s biggest premiere with nearly 10 million viewers and reaching 10 million for the second episode. Amazon has made its series available in 240 territories across the world, where there are approximately 200 million subscribers of the streaming service.

Additionally, Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke released a statement, saying, “It is somehow fitting that [J.R.R.] Tolkien’s stories — among the most popular of all time, and what many consider to be the true origin of the fantasy genre — have led us to this proud moment. I am so grateful to the Tolkien Estate — and to our showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, executive producer Lindsey Weber, cast and crew — for their tireless collaborative efforts and boundless creative energy. And it is the tens of millions of fans watching — clearly as passionate about Middle-earth as we are — who are our true measure of success.”

There is little known about what the previous record holder for the streaming company was and how much it was. It’s reported that third-party companies will analyze and give more of a perspective on the rating performance in the coming weeks. It’s also said that Nielson ratings for the show will be released in about a month. With the recent reception, will the continued adventures of Middle-earth continue this strongly? Time will tell.

What do you think of the show so far? Sound off!
