Rob Cohen to direct hurricane heist movie Category 5

Foresight Unlimited has announced that THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS and ALEX CROSS director Rob Cohen has signed on to helm the upcoming disaster action thriller CATEGORY 5.

The planned film will follow "a team of tech hackers, who infiltrate a U.S. Mint facility on a small coastal town to steal $102M in cash, just as a disastrous Category 5 hurricane, the storm of the century, is about to strike and level it to the ground. The only other two people left in the town, a meteorologist and a female treasury agent, must survive the horrific storm while stopping the thieves from getting away with the heist of the century." So…HARD RAIN, but with a bit more wind?

In a statement, Cohen said “Crossing a heist movie set amidst the intense action of a natural disaster was an idea to which I truly responded. It’s a chance for me to get back to my roots in doing the adrenaline-pumped action/special effects films I love to create."

While CATEGORY 5 is expected to head into production by this summer and casting is already underway, a release date hasn't been announced yet. I'm by no means a huge fan of Cohen, but his new movie sounds like it could be pretty damn fun, in a XXX sort of way.

Cohen most recently helmed the Jennifer Lopez-led erotic thriller THE BOY NEXT DOOR, and is attached to direct Hayden Christensen in Paramount Pictures' THE ADVENTURES OF MARCO POLO.
