Robin Hood set to open the 63rd Cannes Film Fest

Last year the opening screening at the Cannes Film Festival was the Pixar animated film UP. This year the fest will open with a decidedly different film. On May 12th, just two days before it hits theaters worldwide, Universal will premiere ROBIN HOOD out of competition at the Opening of the 63rd Festival de Cannes. UP went on to earn a nomination for Best Picture; can ROBIN HOOD have the same success?

Stars Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett will be on hand to bring some star power to the Croisette. Crowe was previously at Cannes with LA CONFIDENTIAL in 1997 and director Ridley Scott has brought two films – he won Best Debut Film for THE DUELISTS in 1977 and later presented THELMA AND LOUISE out of competition in 1991.

Other films rumored for this year’s Cannes fest include Woody Allen’s YOU WILL MEET A TALL DARK STRANGER, Terrence Malick’s TREE OF LIFE (but to be fair, this was rumored for last year’s fest as well) and WALL STREET: MONEY NEVER SLEEPS.

This year’s Cannes Film Festival kicks off on May 12th with ROBIN HOOD’s premiere and runs until May 23rd.
