Well we just got an email from MGM confirming exactly that! They also confirmed that David Self will be writing the script. We all know Aronofsky (right) as the crafty mind behind stuff like THE FOUNTAIN and REQUIEM FOR A DREAM with David Self’s credits including ROAD TO PERDITION, the upcoming GOD OF WAR, and WOLFMAN.
MGM Chairman Mary Parent made the announce and also had the following to say: “Darren is undeniably one of the most talented, original and visceral film makers, and David is one of the greatest writers in Hollywood. All of us at MGM couldn’t be more excited.” Producers for the flick include: Phoenix Pictures’ Mike Medavoy, Arnold Messer, Brad Fischer and David Thwaites.
Medavoy had the following to say: “After making the first ROBOCOP at Orion more than 20 years ago, I’m thrilled to be helping to return this character to the screen with our partners at MGM and through the eyes of Darren Aronofsky and David Self.” While Fischer and Thwaites added: “With a filmmaker of Darren Aronofsky’s vision and imagination and a writer of David Self’s caliber, we are poised to bring to the screen an entertaining and provocative film, which will now be under the creative guidance of two of the best storytellers working in our industry today.”
So needless to say they’re really looking forward to this one and it looks like they’re gearing it up to be one of the bigger releases of 2010. Now I’m a huge fan of the original ROBOCOP, and I highly doubt this ‘reboot’ will even touch that one, but with a guy like Aronofsky directing, I can’t help be excited! Looks like this one might go with a more twisted, psychological take than the original’s all-out action road.
The premise for this reboot reads: Present day Los Angeles, 20 years after the termination of the RoboCop program, the city decides to reinstate the program. Hopefully we’ll start hearing some casting news soon. We’ll keep you updated.
