RoboCop remake aims for a PG-13 rating

With ROBOCOP hitting Comic-Con this year with director Jose Padilha and stars Michael Keaton, Samuel L. Jackson, Joel Kinnaman and Abbie Cornish all in attendance we were bound to get some news on the upcoming remake. It's just too bad that the news is a bit disappointing. When asked about the film’s rating, Padilha said that they've been gunning for a PG-13 rating — uh oh.

“We were shooting the movie to be seen by the broadest possible audience, which means PG-13. This whole idea about ‘RoboCop’ has to be “R” because the first one was amazingly violent… I never really bought into that. You know, ‘The Dark Knight’ was PG-13, so you can get away with a lot.” It would have been really cool to see ROBOCOP go for a hard R-rating like the original film but that was just wishful thinking. While a PG-13 rating isn't necessarily the end of the world, I can't imagine this did them any favors.

In RoboCop, the year is 2029 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the centre of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilises their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.

ROBOCOP stars Joel Kinnaman as the title character, Gary Oldman as the scientist who creates RoboCop, and Samuel L. Jackson as media mogul Pat Novak. Right now the film is eyeing a Feb. 7, 2014 release.
