We showed you a clip of George A.Romero’s SURVIVAL OF THE DEAD last week (check that shit HERE), a clip that shed some light onto the low budget look and feel of the film. Romero went back to his roots with this one and made the film totally under the grid, no studios involved, no nothing. And apparently, that’s just the way he likes it.
Romero talked with Reuters as he’s out pimping SURVIVAL at the Venice International Film Festival, and he discussed the themes of discrimination that runs rampant throughout the film, how it’s a social commentary on the war in Iraq, and how he loves working independently from the studios. Here’s just a taste of what he had to say:
These last two films, it’s really like going back to the very original films that I made where it was really private financing and real guerrilla-style film making… I’ve had the flexibility in these films to do whatever I wanted to do. At least there’s no policeman looking over your shoulder … There’s no committee. That’s a wonderful freedom to be able to have.
Shit yeah. The only thing I’m sure he misses is all the money that helps a production along its way. I’ve heard mixed reviews about SURVIVAL so far, some seemed pleased with the amount of gore that’s involved, while others think the emphasis was on the gore and not on the story. Yes folks, it’s gonna be one for you to see and decide for yourselves.
Romero goes on to talk about more details to the plot, what inspired him to make this movie, and he even gives props to video games in keeping the zombie craze alive.
