Better late than never. That’s what fans of Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion are probably thinking now that a sequel is officially on the way—even if it took thirty years. Reuniting stars Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow are back for Romy & Michele 2, with the two stars taking the stage at D23 in Anaheim to tee up the long-anticipated sequel.
The two stars hit the stage in character, giving audiences an update on what they’ve been up to since the first film, with them teasing that the gals might be on the hunt for true love, in addition to “officially being Disney princesses.”

While the first film was only a modest success in theaters, grossing $29 million at the North American box office, it was a big hit on VHS and cable, and its cult reputation has grown steadily over the years. It was a big enough hit that it actually spawned a TV movie prequel that recast the leads with Katherine Heigl (pre-Grey’s Anatomy) and Alexandra Breckenridge. The sequel, which has long been desired by fans, will likely bypass theaters for a straight-to-Hulu release, but original writer Robin Schiff is coming back to pen the script. It will be directed by Tim Federle and is set to reunite much of the original cast.
Notably, Janeane Garofalo is back as their acid-tongued frenemy, Heather Mooney, while Alan Cumming will reprise his role as Michele’s high school friend, Sandy Fink, who reemerged at the 10-year reunion as a multimillionaire super-stud. Julia Campbell, who played their bully Christie Masters, will also be back, as will Camryn Manheim. New cast members include Keegan-Michael Key, Patrick Warburton, Rob Huebel, Breckin Meyer, and more. While it was too early to show any footage, the film started shooting in June, so it will likely hit streaming in time for the original’s 30th anniversary this spring.
