Now it’s time to see what our man, Eli Roth, will be serving up next for us. What’s this?! It won’t be an over-the-top bloodfest of severed limbs and eyes? That appears to be the case.
Apparently, HOSTEL: PART II (which I thought was a very worthy sequel) left quite the bad taste in the writer/director’s mouth because he is moving away from the hardcore horror genre and is instead giving us his “first big-budget, PG-13, mass-destruction movie inspired by the mainstream hits CLOVERFIELD and TRANSFORMERS.”
In an interview at the music industry’s NME Awards in Los Angeles, Roth went on to say, “I want total chaos and pandemonium.” Regarding his usual flare for gory frights, he said, “I feel like I pushed the violence in R movies about as far as I can push it. I feel like I’m bled out. I wanna switch it up. Everyone I know has been saying ‘When are you gonna do a movie my kids can see?’ And finally, I’m gonna make a movie that 13-year-old kids can see.”
So Mr. Roth is opting to go the family-friendly route, huh? Well, I don’t think this is necessarily a bad thing. I mean, I still enjoy flicks like TRANSFORMERS and CLOVERFIELD. I’d actually be interested in seeing Roth’s take on ’em. And to not disappoint those still hungering for his signature style of gushing carnage, Roth added that he is not turning his back on violent movies and he expected to fulfill the needs of his bloodthirsty fans by shooting some gratuitous violence to include on an unrated version of the DVD. So I guess we shouldn’t give up on Eli yet (personally, I never did).
