Update: Ewan McGregor in talks to play Obi-Wan Kenobi in new Disney+ series

Update: It would seem that there may be something to this rumour after all as Deadline and other outlets have also reported that Ewan McGregor will return as Obi-Wan Kenobi for a new Disney+ series. While the original rumour stated that McGregor had already signed on, these new reports say that the actor is still in talks. So nothing is 100% official just yet, but we're getting closer!

Here we go again. STAR WARS fans are all too familiar with frequent rumblings of some sort of project which would see Ewan McGregor returning as Obi-Wan Kenobi, and here's another one. The latest rumour (via Cinelinx) making the rounds claims that Lucasfilm is working on a potential Disney+ series which would center around Obi-Wan Kenobi. Not only that, but Ewan McGregor has already reportedly signed on the dotted line. As always, it's best to take this rumour with a grain of salt, but if it is true, we might hear something more official at next week's D23 Expo. Stay tuned.

Ewan McGregor played the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi in all three installments of the STAR WARS prequel trilogy (also making a small voice cameo in THE FORCE AWAKENS), and with almost two decades separating REVENGE OF THE SITH and A NEW HOPE, there's definitely room for a few more adventures with the Jedi Master. McGregor has long expressed his enthusiasm to return to the role, even hoping for multiple movies.

I’ve always thought there was a story to tell between my last one and Alec Guinness’ first one. It would be fun to film that story now I’m older, I’d be the right age. I’m forty-five, Alec Guinness was what, sixty? I could do two of them! I hope that they’re going to explore different genres under the Star Wars banner. And one of those could be an Obi-Wan Kenobi feature film. Or two! The Obi-Wan Kenobi Story Part 1 and Part 2!

At one point there was talk of an Obi-Wan Kenobi feature-film being developed by Stephen Daldry (THE HOURS), but following the disappointment of SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY, Lucasfilm pumped the brakes on their STAR WARS spin-offs and the project seemingly fell apart. Whether this new project really is a Kenobi TV series, a feature-film, an appearance in some other project, or just the mutterings of a mad-man remains to be seen, but I'll be keeping my fingers crossed.

What do you think? Would you prefer to see Obi-Wan Kenobi return for a Disney+ series or for a feature-film?
