You recall those god awful talks of BLADE RUNNER being given the prequel and sequel treatment?
Well, even Roy Batty understands what’s at stake!
In a Hero Complex article, Mr. HOBO himself, Rutger Hauer, made a comment I think most would agree with. That is, if Ridley Scott’s BLADE RUNNER has to be re-appropriated, there’s really only one man for the job. His name, why one Christopher Nolan.
Here’s what Hauer offered:
“If Christopher Nolan would be on it I’d say, ‘All right, go for it! But otherwise you can’t do it.’ Blade Runner is such a unique film. How do you describe a diamond? I don’t think you should ever touch it again.”
I’m sure more than a few of us feel similar, Rutger. A downright travesty it would be to tamper with a flick that should so utterly be left alone. Hell, I can barely stomach the whack TV edits.
Of course Alcorn, the subsidiary of Warner Bros. that has acquired all film and ancillary rights to the 1982 sci-fi masterwork, had already been eyeing Nolan as director. The two parties worked together on INSOMNIA, and Nolan has openly confessed his love of Ridley Scott, so it could be a match made in 2019 Los Angeles (or whenever and where ever they decide to set it).
Still, if the studio was wise, they’d listen not to just us fan-boy purists, they’d listen to a dude that actually took part in the original film. Somehow I don’t think they will…
In his next movie, Hauer will play beer magnate Alfred Heineken!
