Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy to pair for Truman Show-esque Free Guy at Fox

During a time when unique film ideas often feel like they're few and far between, 20th Century Fox has announced that they've landed DEADPOOL and THE HITMAN'S BODYGUARD actor Ryan Reynolds to star in FREE GUY, a film said to feel like a fresh take on 1998's THE TRUMAN SHOW, which starred comedic actor Jim Carrey as an insurance salesman/adjuster discovers his entire life is actually a television show. According to the spec script for FREE GUY, the project tells of when a bank teller stuck in his routine discovers he’s a background character in a rather brutal open world, action-adventure video game and he is the only one capable of saving his world.

Poised to direct the film is STRANGER THINGS alum SHAWN LEVY, who'll be joined by Berlanti Productions’ Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter on producing duties alongside Reynolds’ Maximum Effort, Levy’s 21 Laps, and Adam Kolbrenner.

Holy shit. Imagine slaving through your work-a-day job only to discover that you're a playable character in some Grand Theft Auto-like video game world. Would you play the hero, or embrace your dark side and go chatoic evil on all those around you? How many lives do you get? Are there consequences for your actions, do that even matter? Reynolds' character will have to ask himself these questions and many more when production for FREE GUY gets underway. We'll be keeping a close eye on this one, as it sounds ridiculously cool. Quarters up!
