First Look at Sacrifice

Anya Taylor-Joy knows a thing or two about satirizing social classes. The actress had previously starred in The Menu, and she will again tackle the subject in the upcoming Netflix movie Sacrifice. The streamer is now giving audiences a sneak peek at the film with a series of first-look images.

The official synopsis reads, “During a star-studded charity gala brimming with celebrities, billionaires and empty speeches, a movie star in the midst of an existential crisis (Chris Evans) is taken hostage by a radical warrior (Anya Taylor-Joy) and her devoted followers. As the night descends into chaos, both an inward journey and an outward adventure ensue, where the line between performance and belief, salvation and sacrifice, begins to blur.”

The cast includes Chris Evans, Anya Taylor-Joy, Vincent Cassel, Ambika Mod, Sam Richardson, Jonatan “Yung Lean” Leandoer, Jade Croot, Miriam Silverman, with John Malkovich and Salma Hayek Pinault. Romain Gavras directs the film from a script Gavras co-wrote with Will Arbery. Producers on the project include Robert Walak, Jacob Perlin, Romain Gavras, Gregory Jankilevitsch, Klaudia Smeija-Rostworkerska and Giorgos Karnavas. Meanwhile, Marcin Czernik, Monika Ratajczak, Farhana Bhula, Ollie Madden, Richard Mansell, Ioanna Stais, Afroditi Panagiotakou, Dimitris Theodoropoulos, Katerina Kaskanioti, Phil Hunt, Compton Ross, Walid Said, Rohit Khanna, Jonathan Gray, Matthew Rhodes, Michael Sklut, Chris Evans, Anya Taylor-Joy, Thorsten Schumacher, Chiara Gelardin and Will Arbery serve as executive producers on the film.

Gavras states, “The film is kind of a roller coaster. You need to enter the film like you’re going to enter a ride and let yourself go. There’s a lot of rug pulls and you think you’re going this way, but you’re going that way.” Check out the new pictures below.

What did we think about Sacrifice?

Last year, our Chris Bumbray got to screen the movie at the previous TIFF, but he was not impressed. He said in his 4/10 review, “Tonally, the movie is wildly inconsistent, with Gavras’s real-life muse Vincent Cassel acting like he’s in a legit kidnapping thriller, while supporting players like John Malkovich and Sam Richardson ham it up. It feels like no one involved quite knew what kind of movie they were making, and the film may have fared better had it been done straight and not as satire.

While technically a well-made movie, Gavras’s Sacrifice seems doomed to the same fate as last year’s The End, meaning it will largely pass unnoticed. It’s ambitious work from talented people, but it doesn’t quite land.”
