Sadie Sink, who appears in a starring voice-acting role for Netflix’s new horror video game from David Fincher and Zach Cregger, titled Unhinged (read our review here), continues to make headlines this Wednesday with more details about her mysterious role in Sony and Marvel‘s Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Sink stars in the upcoming superhero sequel alongside Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Jacob Batalon. However, who she plays in the latest web-slinging adventure remains a mystery.
Many people online believe Sink is playing the mutant Jean Grey in the Destin Daniel Cretton-directed sequel, but no one knows for certain. Online sleuths have spotted Sink on set wearing several outfits, including Punisher-like armor and an oversized coat with the hood pulled up, obscuring her face, or so people think. The fact of the matter is that no one knows for sure. Interestingly, not even Sink knew who she’d be playing until she arrived on the Brand New Day set. According to a Nylon cover story, Sink didn’t even audition for her part. “Sometimes even she wasn’t privy to the details [of her Marvel role]: Sink was offered her role without an audition, having worked with director Destin Daniel Cretton on the 2017 film ‘The Glass Castle,’ and she didn’t receive a script until she landed in London.”
“I knew that Marvel was a big deal and had a big brand, especially Spider-Man,” Sink told Nylon about her knowledge of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “I know there’s a huge fan base, but it feels really big. I think these blockbuster movies are a whole different beast.”
Many newcomers to the MCU have expressed trepidation about joining the franchise, saying there’s a lot of pressure to live up to fan expectations, not to mention navigating the massive productions. Thankfully, Sink has Tom Holland in her corner, who by now is a seasoned pro at making Marvel (and fans) happy. “It was interesting stepping into that space and being a little bit of an outsider in that way, but he could not have been more welcoming, and just the whole crew in general. He was just so relaxed and open, and I felt very at ease,” Sink said about Holland taking her under his wing and making her feel welcome and comfortable.
Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrives in theaters on July 31, and we may not know who Sink plays until then. Is it Jean Grey? Another member of the Parker family? From a different dimension, perhaps? Let us know who you think she’s playing in the comments below!
