After being passed through the rectum of a gigantic crocodile (I assume that’s what happened to him off-screen in ROGUE), Aussie Sam Worthington has taken Hollywood by storm with some high-profile parts. But while some of them (TERMINATOR SALVATION, CLASH OF THE TITANS) may or may not make return trips to the screen, he’s got plenty of other options.
Worthington is now attached to QUATERMAIN, a Dreamworks sci-fi re-imagining of the classic literary character Allan Quatermain. According to Heat Vision, the story “is set in a time in which humans have left Earth and sees Quatermain return to the planet from a sojourn in space, embarking on another “King Solomon’s Mines”-style adventure but on a planetwide scale.”
Genre guys Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (“Smallville”, upcoming I AM NUMBER FOUR) are producing this one. Whether this will impact Worthington’s involvement with the space-adventurer project DAN DARE is unknown, since the material seems superficially similar.
Like a number of other recent big-budget projects such as SHERLOCK HOLMES, H. Rider Haggard’s hunter/adventurer Quatermain (which helped inspire the good Dr. Jones) is in the public domain, which means studios can reap financial benefits from familiar characters without having to clear rights. Although, tragically, many moviegoers today probably only know the Quatermain character from Sean Connery’s portrayal in LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN.
Speaking of public domain, Worthington is also attached to a DRACULA project that will be a “period retelling” of the legend.
