Saw 3D midnight box-office, new stills and franchise fun facts!

He’s done it again folks…Jigsaw’s successfully brought his traps to the masses!

With extreme pressure looming, perceived or real, over Kevin Greutert’s second try at the most successful horror franchise of all time…it seems the man is on track to exact retribution. Much has been made about the box-office showdown between SAW 3D and PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2, a rematch from last year’s utter domination by Oren Peli’s PARANORMAL ACTIVITY.

The drama spiked when, in an odd twist of fate, Greutert was shortly hired to direct PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2 before being unceremoniously brushed aside for Tod Williams. Greutert then landed the SAW 3D gig. Making things juicier, both films were set to open head-to-head last Friday, but only one title did so. As you know P.A. 2 culled $41.5 million at the box-office…setting the all time record for a supernatural horror flick.

So how will SAW 3D stack up? We have the midnight numbers!

According to various outlets, SAW 3D minced its way to a $1.7 million in tickets sold during midnight screenings Thursday night. Given that take, the film is estimated to garner well over $20 million over the weekend, which includes Halloween. Pretty successful when you consider the film only cost about $20 million or so to make. Not only that, SAW VI made only $14 million opening weekend, so for a “final chapter,” people came out and supported the long running franchise (of course, 3D ticket prices may also account for this year’s increase).

And speaking of the franchise, Lionsgate recently hit us with a list of fun-facts pertaining to all things SAW:

  • *The SAW series (starting in 2004) is officially listed as the “Most Successful Horror Movie Series” in the Guinness Book of World Records
  • *The SAW franchise has created a nationwide blood drive that has had filmgoers donate nearly 124,641 pints of blood to help save as many as 373,923 lives

  • *SAW 3D is the first theatrical feature of all 7 to be shot exclusively on the cutting-edge SI-3D digital camera system
  • *The SAW films have been referenced on TV series as diverse as ‘The Simpsons,’ ‘The Sopranos,’ and ‘Entourage,’ and most recently, in the feature film GET HIM TO THE GREEK

  • *The franchise has extended itself to video games, amusement rides (world’s first horror-theme rollercoaster opened in the UK), amusement park mazes/ horror nights and Halloween costumes (ranging from masks to body parts and the unforgettably terrifying hanging pig head)

    Good shite, right?

But if you thought that was all had, think again. We’ve also tossed in an additional handful of stills from SAW 3D…two of which are pretty f*ckin’ gnarly, the others…not so much.

SAW 3D is in theaters today!
