Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark documentary hits DVD this July

Writer Alvin Schwartz and illustrator Stephen Gammell’s controversial children’s horror book series Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark has inspired an upcoming film from producer Guillermo del Toro and director André Øvredal that will be upon us later this year. But that’s not all. The series has also inspired a feature-length documentary. And speaking of which, today we have word Cody Meirick’s SCARY STORIES will be hitting DVD this July.

The film includes interviews with members of Schwartz’s family, GOOSEBUMPS and FEAR STREET author R.L. Stine, Bruce Coville, Q.L. Pearce, Debbie Dadey, and over 40 other authors, artists, scholars, and fans. The documentary will explore

the history of one of the most controversial works of modern children’s literature: The best selling teen classic Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, which scared a generation of readers and became one of the most banned books of modern times. Includes the author’s family, scholars, folklorists, artists, fans, and children’s book authors such as R.L. Stine, Q.L. Pearce, and more.

Directed by Cody Meirick, Scary Stories will be released on DVD via Wild Eye Releasing on July 16. If you don’t know who Cody Meirick is, perhaps you’ll know his father Don Meirick? Maybe not. Meanwhile, Lionsgate will be releasing Del Toro and Øvredal’s SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK starring Zoe Colletti, Gil Bellows, and Dean Norris in theaters on August 9, 2019.
