I seriously don’t know what to make of this “news” other than, if it turns out to be legit, I’ll sure as hell follow its development closely.
UPDATE: von Trier’s business partner Peter Aalbaek Jensen has said that this rumor is not true.
Reports coming out of the Berlin Film Festival indicate that Martin Scorsese and Danish director/madman Lars von Trier (ANTI CHRIST) are considering teaming up to remake (or reimagine, as it were) Scorsese’s immortal TAXI DRIVER. With f*cking Robert De Niro returning to play disturbed loner Travis Bickle.
Uhhhhh… okay?!?!
Who knows what’s true and what’s not here. I don’t even dare speculate, because it’s way too early. The only source so far is Danish film magazine EKKO, which claims von Trier collaborator Peter Aalbaek Jensen is set to make an official announcement very soon.
De Niro’s (supposed) involvement would seem to indicate that the project could be a sequel of some sort – and yet the word is it’s a remake (to be directed by Scorsese and dictated by von Trier’s loony rules, no less). I’m just too weirded out by the prospect of another TAXI DRIVER that I’m not even sure how to react. Outraged? Confounded? Curious..? Let’s be honest here – if this thing actually goes into pre-production, there won’t be many film buffs not interested in the finished product. This could end up being really fascinating…
