Remember way back in October, when SCREAM 4 was a go? Now remember a couple days later, when SCREAM 4 wasn’t happening.
Well either The Weinsteins came up with the idea then and there or they were throwing us for a loop, because it seems SCREAM 4 is, in fact, happening!
We got a press release today from Showtime Networks and The Weinstein Company announcing that the two have reached a long term deal! This deal will span 7 years and includes over 95 films including: ‘NINE, INGLORIOUS BASTARDS, ALL GOOD THINGS, the SEVENTH SAMURAI remake, THE ALCHEMIST, PANIC, YOUTH IN REVOLT, 6 BILLION DOLLAR MAN, the SCANNERS remake, PIRANHA 3-D and… of course… SCREAM 4!
The press release also points out that Showtime and TWC’s Dimension Films have been partnered since 1997, when Showtime aired MIMIC and SCREAM 2.
I actually remember that distinctively because watching SCREAM 2 on Showtime was where my love for horror got resurrected.
So it looks like SCREAM 4 is indeed a go! I always thought I’d be iffy on this announcement if it was ever made (again), but I find myself really excited for it. I’m a huge fan of the SCREAM franchise. From the classic first film to the cheesy-esque third, which capped off a perfect trilogy… a trilogy I never wanted to end.
And that’s the kicker… it doesn’t look like this franchise will end anytime soon because the press release also points out that SCREAM 4 will be ‘the re-start of the SCREAM franchise.’ Now when someone says they’re re-starting a franchise… that usually means we’re in store for more than one film…
Unfortunately that also usually means there’s a brand new crew along for the ride… and that just won’t do. Mind you no names have been announced yet, this is pure speculation. “Re-starting’ what was always supposed to be a trilogy is already iffy… bringing in a new director and cast would fit the term ‘digging one’s own grave.’ Would TWC really be ballsy enough to re-start the franchise without Wes Craven and company (which includes the gorgeous Neve Campbell below)? Only time will tell I suppose.
