IT: Chapter Two screenwriter says ending will break your heart

Director Andres Muschietti's upcoming follow up to his hit adaptation of Stephen King's IT: CHAPTER TWO will also see the return of mega horror screenwriter Gary Dauberman (see above) to the series after penning not only the first film but other recent horror hits such as ANNABELLE and THE NUN as well.

And recently Dauberman spoke about the upcoming THE CONJURING spin-off THE NUN (which hit theaters today and you can read our review RIGHT HERE) and dropped a bit of new info on IT: CHAPTER TWO. Mainly that the ending will satisfy and maybe break our hearts a little bit as well.

Screenwriter Gary Dauberman:

Like I said with the first one, it’s really this embarrassment of riches. It was trying to do your best job of taking what Stephen King wrote so beautifully all those years ago and try to translate it to the script page. For me it was just really fun to be able to revisit these characters and see what they’re up to 27 years later. There was a challenge trying to get all those character introductions and “here’s where we are so far” which is fun to tackle. How can we find an elegant solution to introduce this many characters again to the audience? In the first one, they’re all together in school so you see them in a bunch but 27 years later, I don’t think it’s a spoiler they’re sort of scattered all over the country. So we see pieces of who they’ve become which I think is really exciting. Then of course it was great to see them return to Derry. The Jade of the Orient is such a defining and iconic scene in the book. That was something I remember as a thing I was writing towards. It was like, “Okay, coming up is Jade of the Orient. That’s going to be super cool.” It was a nice signpost to write towards which I dug.

He then adds:

The ending I think will satisfy the audience and maybe break their hearts a little bit.

I've read the book countless times and know it by heart and I can say that there sure are some sad and heartbreaking moments coming up, for sure. Let's just hope Dauberman and company manage to capture these moments with at least SOME of the emotional impact they had in King's source novel. I'm optimistic!

Bill Skarsgård returns in the seminal role of Pennywise. James McAvoy (SPLIT, GLASS) stars as Bill, Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain (CRIMSON PEAK, MAMA) as Beverly, Bill Hader (BARRY, THE SKELETON TWINS) as Richie, Isaiah Mustafa (SHADOWRUNNER: THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS) as Mike, Jay Ryan (MARY KILLS PEOPLE) as Ben, James Ransone (SINISTER, SINISTER 2) as Eddie, and Andy Bean (ALLEGIANT) as Stanley.

Reprising their roles as the original members of the Losers Club are Jaeden Lieberher as Bill, Wyatt Oleff as Stanley, Sophia Lillis as Beverly, Finn Wolfhard as Richie, Jeremy Ray Taylor as Ben, Chosen Jacobs as Mike, and Jack Dylan Grazer as Eddie.

Here's the new film's semi-synopsis:

Because every 27 years evil revisits the town of Derry, Maine, IT CHAPTER TWO brings the characters—who’ve long since gone their separate ways—back together as adults, nearly three decades after the events of the first film.

Muschietti directs from a screenplay by Gary Dauberman (IT, ANNABELLE: CREATION) based on the novel by Stephen King. Barbara Muschietti, Dan Lin, and Roy Lee are producing the film. Marty Ewing, Seth Grahame-Smith, and David Katzenberg are the executive producers. The behind-the-scenes creative team includes director of photography Checco Varese (THE 33), Oscar-winning production designer Paul D. Austerberry (THE SHAPE OF WATER), editor Jason Ballantine (IT, MAD MAX: FURY ROAD), and Oscar-nominated costume designer Luis Sequeira (THE SHAPE OF WATER, MAMA).

Production is currently taking place in Toronto, Canada. IT CHAPTER TWO is a New Line Cinema production. It will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures on September 6, 2019.
