Shailene Woodley & Sam Claflin are lost at sea in Adrift trailer

Humans love a great survival story. They validate the strength of the human and celebrate triumph over immense adversity, and all that fun stuff. People also love love stories, so it makes sense to make a survival/love story hybrid with the new movie ADRIFT. In the movie, Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin must fight to stay alive after their boat is hit by a hurricane. Director Baltasar Kormákur helmed the movie, and along with survival tale EVEREST under his belt, now needs to make a movie about someone stranded in the desert. Call it the Land, Sea and Air trilogy.

Here is the plot synopsis:

ADRIFT is based on the true story of two avid sailors who set out on a journey across the ocean in 1983. Tami Oldham and Richard Sharp didn't anticipate they would be sailing directly into one of the most catastrophic hurricanes in recorded history. In the aftermath of the storm, Tami awakens to find Richard badly injured and their boat in ruins, and must find the strength and determination to save herself and the only man she has ever loved.

The movie doesn’t look like it will be the next CAST AWAY, or even ALL IS LOST (J.C. Chandor’s film with Robert Redford), but it looks like a solid survival tale with two charming leads at the wheel. It will surely make a great date night movie, causing a lot of “if were stranded together at sea, what would you do?” discussions.

ADRIFT hits theaters June 1.
