Slam!: HBO Max greenlights animated roller derby series based on comic book

Oh, hell yeah! I'm not going to lie: I've been waiting to write this article for a long time. It's been announced that Slam!, a graphic novel series set in the world of all-female roller derby, is getting an animated adaptation at HBO Max.

The half-hour series is hitting the court thanks to Pamela Ribon (Moana, Ralph Breaks the Internet), who co-created the comic with Veronica Fish, with WarnerMedia-owned Rooster Teeth Studios, BOOM! Studios, and Minnow Mountain. The story skates circles around Jennifer Chu and Maise Huff (aka Knockout and Ithinka Can on the track), who have been best friends since their first day of Fresh Meat Orientation for the Eastside Roller Girls. However, when they get drafted for two different teams they'll have to figure out if the bond between them is stronger than the pull of a team when a win is on the line. ' You get slammed on the track and slammed in life, and in both cases, you have to take your hits and get back up again!

According to reports, Slam! will be created using a combination of rotoscoped and 3D animation. Craig Staggs and Steph Swope’s Minnow Mountain are in charge of the animation. Minnow Mountain's previous work includes Amazon's Undone. The first issue of Slam! hit stands November 16, 2016. After its initial run, a sequel series titled Slam!: The Next Jam was released. Part Drew Barrymore's Whip It and part Netflix's GLOW, Slam! is all about attitude, the thrill of a good jam, and rivalries both on and off the track. Grab your skates, your pads, and let's go!
