Sony announces plans to web up a Spider-Women film for their Spider-Verse

Oh Sony, it's like you heard my nerdy little prayers, as it's been announced that a SPIDER-WOMEN film is being developed as a part of the studio's Spider-Man Universe initiative. With scripting by WRATH OF THE TITANS and DEADLINE GALLIPOLI scribe Bek Smith, Sony plans to unleash an animated feature film that will focus on three generations of women with Spidey powers. While it's suspected that Spider-Gwen – who is set to make her big screen debut with Sony's upcoming SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE animation – will be a featured character in the newly-announced project, there are still plenty of badass Spider-Women who could join this very exciting project. For example, Cindy Moon a.k.a. Silk, Marvel's Korean American wall-crawler, could join the fray – especially when you consider that Sony is in the early stages of developing a feature-length adaptation of the character's web-slinging exploits. Other Spider-Women who could arrive in the newly-announced animated film include: Jessica Drew a.k.a. Spider-Woman, Mayday Parker a.k.a. Spiderling, and Mary Jane Parker a.k.a. Spinneret.

Little about the SPIDER-WOMEN project is known at this time, though it has been confirmed that Amy Pascal will produce, with Avi Arad, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller likely to be involved as well. In related news, Sony is already prepping a sequel to SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE, which would continue the story of Miles Morales, Marvel's bi-racial (Miles' father is African American while his mother is of Puerto Rican decent) wall-crawler.

Bring it the hell on, Sony! There are so many great characters in the Spider-Man pantheon, and welcoming them into the feature-length fold can only reap glorious rewards. After all, opening the Spider-Verse to even more Spider-people could lead to major crossover events and even higher stakes for the friendly neighborhood do-gooders. Plus, the Spider-Man comicverse is known to get real weird at times. Imagine the eye-popping art that could be used to represent a hallucinatory attack by Mysterio, or an all-out war where heroes and villains alike have been infected by the Venom symbiote. The sky is the limit, really, and my body is so ready. Thwip-thwip!
