Well Roland Emmerich (right), the man that brought us such flicks as said THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW, INDEPENDENCE DAY, GODZILLA, UNIVERSAL SOLDIER, THE PATRIOT, and the upcoming 10,000 B.C., is bringing us the newest ‘the world is ending so let’s all go nuts and watch everything blow up’ flick called 2012.
Ammon first told you about it a couple days ago, stating how Emmerich was currently searching for a studio. Well The Hollywood Reporter are reporting on who the winner is.
That would be Sony Pictures Entertainment. With the deal comes a slightly more detailed synopsis: The script blends the idea of the Mayan calendar, which predicts the world ending in 2012, with natural disasters such as volcanic eruptions, typhoons and glaciers plaguing the planet and a large cast of characters dealing with the mayhem. And a release date: July 10, 2009.
Looks like they’re setting this one up to be one of the blockbusters of next summer, rightfully so considering it’s got a 200 million dollar budget. It’s interesting to note that The Hollywood Reporter is saying that most studios bowed out of the bidding early, stating: ‘Some didn’t like the story, describing it as a “Roland Emmerich greatest-hits package.”‘ Hmm. What’s wrong with that?
So 2012 is geared up and ready to start pre-production. Hopefully some casting news will come our way soon, as always we’ll keep you updated.
