One of the great disappointments of my movie-going life to date was SPAWN. You take an incredibly cool hero, cobble together a great cast, and then the whole thing gets bogged down in crappy CGI and a weak narrative. This when the comic it was based on is one of the most creative and mature mythologies ever created.
That was a bad day.
Now it sounds like another SPAWN may be coming our way. Rumors of another project with various players involved has circulated since the first flick tanked, but in an interview with The Arizona Republic recently, McFarlane himself seemed to confirm that a new SPAWN is indeed going to be born.
He was asked about the creative direction of the SPAWN comic book and how involved he is in it. Here’s his response:
I’ve been trying to reassert myself into the equation. I sort of let Spawn the comic book go on autopilot, and we’ve got issue 150 coming up (146 is on the stands now) and I want to shake things up here so I just had a two-hour conversation with somebody overseas who might come on board in a creative capacity in bringing on a new editor and sort of go in a different direction, I’m sort of saying, “Hey it’s time to shake the dust off this guy a little bit, and get people excited about the comic book.” Why? Because the book has been around 150 issues which is a tremendous number for an independent comic, and also we’re currently working on the return of Spawn in animation form, and this summer I’ll be writing the screenplay for a movie that I’ll be directing that I hope I can get started in December or January.
He gives no other details on the film, though the rest of the interview is a good read if you’re a fan. For now I’m just going to sit back and imagine the joy of actually having a good SPAWN movie to watch.
