After a lot of back-and-forth, Spider-Man: Brand New Day ended up beating Avengers: Endgame to score the biggest opening weekend in box office history, with a whopping $360 million take. Now, the question is how Brand New Day will fare in its second weekend. I predicted about $150 million, but Deadline has the film coming in slightly lower, with it on track for a $143 million weekend. That would be the third-best second weekend of all time, behind Avengers: Endgame’s $145.8 million and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which holds the record at $149.2 million.
The other openers this weekend are all faring poorly. One big question mark was how Will Gluck’s One Night Only would perform. The film has been praised for the chemistry between leads Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro, but many are having a hard time wrapping their heads around the concept — that it takes place in a world where premarital sex is illegal, save for one night a year. The B+ CinemaScore is fair, but the $6 million start is exceedingly poor. However, it should be noted that Gluck’s last film, Anyone But You, had a nearly identical opening and legged out to $88.3 million domestically, so all hope is not lost. But that movie opened during the lucrative Christmas movie corridor and benefited from being counterprogramming. One Night Only doesn’t have that advantage.
Broken Lizard’s Super Troopers 3 is looking at a weak $4 million opening, which is a disappointment, as Super Troopers 2 was a sleeper hit with a $15.2 million opening. This is even less than the $6.2 million the original made in 2001 (it later became a huge cult hit on DVD). Still, it’s doing better than Eli Roth’s Ice Cream Man, which is a disaster with only about a $2 million weekend in store for Roth’s much-anticipated launch of his Horror Section label.
