Have you ever wondered where Peter Parker gets the money to pay rent and build all his wonderful toys? Seriously, a penthouse apartment in Manhattan isn’t cheap, regardless of how dilapidated it is. My latest theory is that he’s getting a slice of that sweet Sony box office, which is positively booming since the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. According to reports, the friendly neighborhood wall-crawler’s latest silver-screen adventure, Brand New Day, is 2026’s top-grossing movie, seven days out from its release!
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has earned $1.15 billion since its theatrical debut last week, with $449 million domestically and $706.3 million internationally. The film’s total (so far) surpasses the previous champion, Pixar’s Toy Story 5, which has earned an impressive $1.07 billion worldwide.
In addition to becoming the highest-grossing film of 2026, Spider-Man: Brand New Day recently secured the “biggest domestic debut in box office history” with $360 million, as well as the second-largest global debut of all time with $932 million. Brand New Day‘s performance also raises fresh questions about the long-running “superhero fatigue” narrative.
“People can write about changing tastes, but as characters that grow and evolve through the decades, there are none better than the Marvel characters, and none better than Peter Parker,” Kevin Feige said on Monday morning. “When you find an actor like Tom Holland to bring that character to life, it is the magic formula.”
I had the pleasure of seeing Brand New Day last Thursday, and it’s definitely my favorite Spidey film of the Tom Holland era, with Homecoming following close behind. The film does an excellent job of keeping the story relatively small and personal, while also taking big steps to introduce the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe. While Holland is content to remain in the role for the foreseeable future, I do wonder when he’ll pass the web-covered baton. Given the box office results, it’s hard to imagine Sony and Marvel rushing to replace Holland. Still, there are also rumblings about introducing a live-action Miles Morales to the mix. This aspect of Marvel’s future is only a rumor for now, but if Sony wants to switch things up, they’ll start looking at actors to tell Miles’ story and introduce him in whatever comes next.
