Spider-Man: Homecoming casts fighter Tyron Woodley & comedian Martha Kelly

Well, well, well, it looks like SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING has entangled even more people into its web…its casting web that is. I felt like not clarifying it’s a casting web made it sound like the movie is an actual maniac, snatching-up people in a makeshift web so he can add them to his army to fight a race of robot lizards he thinks are coming to get him. Okay, this got away from me fast. Two new people have been cast in SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING, is what I’m getting at.

These two new additions to the cast couldn’t be more different, either. The first is MMA fighter and current UFC Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley. Though he didn’t specify who he was playing, Woodley passively mentioned he will be in a Marvel movie during an interview with The MMA Hour:

“I don't know if I can even say this, but I'm working on a Marvel movie on Thursday in Atlanta.”

He doesn’t say SPIDER-MAN directly, but Atlanta is where they're currently shooting the flick. Woodley is new to the acting game, having done bit parts in movies like STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON and KICKBOXER: VENGEANCE, and did stunts for OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN. So the guy has lots of experience beating people up in the movie realm, as much as in the real world.

Along with Woodley, comedian/actress Martha Kelly has also been cast in HOMECOMING, according to Deadline. Kelly’s breakout role was in the Zach Galifianakis/Louis C.K. show, BASKETS. Like Woodley, Kelly has been cast in an unspecified role.

I haven’t knowingly seen either of these folks act, so I can’t really speak to their range or where their talents may place them in terms of casting. My guess is that Woodley is probably playing some sort of muscle, meant to throw Spidey around, given his proclivity for that sort of thing as a professional fighter. As for Kelly I can’t really seem to put my finger on any role she might have. Hell, she may be throwing people around with Woodley. I have no clue.

I guess we will probably have a more definite casting list some time before Spidey swings into theaters July 7, 2017.
