Updated: Star Lord’s father has been revealed in this latest rumor

UPDATE: James Gunn has issued a rebuttle to this scoop, saying that it's false. Read his full statement HERE, but the gist is below:

"All right. From this moment on I’m going to stop commenting on any rumors surrounding Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, because, eventually, someone is going to come up with a spoiler that has some truth to it. That said, the rumors surrounding Quill’s parentage at the present moment are completely false, and aren’t even close to the truth. I don’t know how people come up with this stuff, but it certainly isn’t through legitimate sources."

The mystery of Star Lord/Peter Quill's father was teased at the end of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, and is sure to be a plot point in the upcoming VOL. 2. Director James Gunn stated that the films would not be following the source material, and now that mystery may have been revealed thanks to Heroic Hollywood. For those of you looking to keep things a surprise, there are some MAJOR SPOILERS regarding Peter Quill's father and his place in the Marvel-verse. You have been warned!

As El Mayimbe reports, Peter Quill's father in the Marvel cinematic universe may be that of Captain Marvel, or rather, Captain Mar-Vell. Read on!

So, a bit of a history lesson for those unfamiliar. The first Captain Marvel, created by Stan Lee and Gene Colan in Marvel Super-Heroes #12, was an alien military officer. Captain Mar-Vell, of the Kree Imperial Militia, was sent to observe planet Earth as the Kree were developing technology to travel into space. Mar-Vell eventually allied himself with Earth, and the Kree Empire branded him a traitor. From then on, Mar-Vell fought to protect Earth.

Now, for those of you curious on how this will connect to the Captain Marvel movie featuring Carol Danvers, Mar-Vell will evidently gift superpowers her way. Given that director James Gunn prides himself on the GUARDIANS flicks standing apart from the rest of the Marvel movies, I imagine we may not get too much into the Carol Danvers side of things until her solo flick comes out. In the meantime, this will be a cool way to set up a future superhero, as well as reference an alien race that audiences are familiar with. Here's hoping that Gunn can introduce the type of Kree that seems more like a living, breathing creature rather than CG fodder.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on May 5, 2017.
