Star Trek: Discovery has been renewed for season two

STAR TREK: DISCOVERY has delivered on the promise to boldly take TREK fans where they have never gone before, and fans new and old have been tuning in every week in droves for the intergalactic adventure. The show has already proved such a success, and Trekkies everywhere can jump for joy now that it has been announced today that the new Starfleet crew will return for a second season.

CBS All Access made the announcement this morning, and that thanks to rave reviews and high viewership, STAR TREK: DISCOVERY has caused subscription rates with the service to skyrocket. Marc DeBevoise, President and Chief Operating Officer of CBS Interactive said that with only six episodes in, season one has already lived-up to the TREK legacy:

In just six episodes, Star Trek: Discovery has driven subscriber growth, critical acclaim and huge global fan interest for the first premium version of this great franchise, This series has a remarkable creative team and cast who have demonstrated their ability to carry on the Star Trek legacy. We are extremely proud of what they’ve accomplished and are thrilled to be bringing fans a second season of this tremendous series.

The first half of season one is currently airing, with the season being split up into two chapters, with Chapter One concluding on November 12, and Chapter Two picking up in January 2018. The new series stars Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, Jason Isaacs, Anthony Rapp, Michelle Yeoh, and Shazad Latif in a kind of prequel to the original series, as the crew ventures into the final frontier to explore new alien life forms and worlds.

I haven’t seen the new show myself, but I’ve read nice things, so maybe it will be a Netflix binge-watch scenario. Trek fans are probably pumped for the show’s renewal though, as I’m sure they’re begging for more now that this one has proven to live up to the hype. There's a lot of juice in the TREK franchise yet, and I think we're just seeing the start of this new series' success. If everything goes perfectly, seven years from now fans will be saying how much better the first seasons were than the new ones.

STAR TREK: DISCOVERY is currently airing season one.
