Steve Niles’ Freaks of the Heartland on hold at Overture Films

So what’s your opinion on Steve Niles? I don’t see how anything bad can be sad about this man. Niles is behind properties of 30 DAYS OF NIGHT, 28 DAYS LATER, WAKING THE DEAD and FREAKS OF THE HEARTLAND among lots others. As you can see all impressive. Now I’m here today to talk to you all about FREAKS OF THE HEARTLAND.

You see there’s been a FREAKS film in the works for a while now, with David Gordon Green attached to direct at one point. Talks have gone for well over a year and today they come to a stop all together! Buried in an article over at The Hollywood Reporter about the troubles at Overture Films is the news that FREAKS OF THE HEARTLAND has been put on hold.

In the wake of a spotty track record at the boxoffice in 2009, Liberty/Starz is taking a close look at the company’s operations. But while company insiders are describing it as forward-looking financial planning, agencies have been informed of a 90-day hold on development.

What does this mean for FREAKS OF HEARTLAND? Well nothing for the next 90 days at least… Shame too as the film was just about to begin casting. Hopefully things even out and we do end up seeing FREAKS OF THE HEARTLAND on the big screen. Until we hear about more FREAKS news I’ll leave you all with the comic’s synopsis:

Under the weathered skies of America’s heartland, and in the wounded hearts of every family in one tiny rural town, a terrible secret has been kept for too many years. Now, a young boy named Trevor must try to keep his younger brother Will from falling victim to the worst fears of a troubled town that can’t begin to understand the tragic secret that binds its families together. Some folks would call Trevor’s brother a monster. But to Trevor, Will is just another kid trapped in a dark reality he can’t comprehend. When the situation moves from bad to worse, and their father threatens to do away with Will, Trevor learns that they’re not alone – that “freak” children were born to other families in Gristlewood Valley. Against all odds, and with nothing but love for his brother in his heart, Trevor is going to do whatever he can to get the freak children out of harm’s way, if it’s not already too late.
