Steven Spielberg starts principal photography on spy thriller with Tom Hanks

The time has come for the bearded one to jump back behind the camera, and his next movie will be the untitled Cold War spy thriller starring the ever charismatic Tom Hanks. The flick will also star Mark Rylance (THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL), Amy Ryan (GONE BABY GONE) and Alan Alda (THE AVIATOR). Shooting will commence immediately on location in New York and Berlin. The movie follows the true story of James Donovan (Hanks), an attorney who finds himself thrust into the center of the Cold War when the CIA sends him on the near-impossible mission to negotiate the release of a captured American U-2 pilot.

IMDb is currently using the title ST. JAMES PLACE for this flick, but given the teaming of Spielberg and Hanks, I'm sure they can call it whatever they like and audiences will still turn up to see what the two deliver. The two filmmakers are just at that point in their career where they tend to do projects out of passion, rather than paychecks, so anything they attach their name to deserves a look. A new Spielberg picture also means a new score from master composer John Williams and that never fails to put a smile on my face. With Joel and Ethan Coen penning the screenplay, this will no doubt end up being one of the most anticipated releases of next year.

The film is set to hit theaters on October 16, 2015.
