Disney’s Strange World explores a December 23 streaming debut on Disney+

Strange Worlds, Disney, streaming, Disney+

Something strange is coming to Disney+ on December 23. Prepare yourselves for an adventure spanning strange worlds, and countless stars, with no limits to where your imagination can go. I’m excited to report Disney’s Strange World is heading to the mouse-eared streaming service in time for the holidays on December 23!

Per Disney’s official press release:

Disney’s Strange World introduces a legendary family of explorers, the Clades, as they attempt to navigate an uncharted, treacherous land alongside a motley crew that includes a mischievous blob called Splat; Legend, the family dog; and a slew of ravenous creatures. The voice cast includes Academy Award- and Tony Award-nominated actor Jake Gyllenhaal as Searcher Clade, a family man who finds himself out of his element on an unpredictable mission; Emmy- and two-time Golden Globe-nominee Dennis Quaid as Searcher’s larger-than-life explorer father, Jaeger; comedian, actor, writer, filmmaker, and musician Jaboukie Young-White as Searcher’s 16-year-old, adventure-seeking son, Ethan; actress, producer, bestselling author and TIME100 cover honoree Gabrielle Union as Meridian Clade, an accomplished pilot and Searcher’s partner in all things; and critically acclaimed actress, producer, director, and fine artist Lucy Liu as Callisto Mal, Avalonia’s fearless leader who spearheads the exploration into the strange World. Helmed by director Don Hall (Oscar-winning Big Hero 6Raya and the Last Dragon) and co-director/writer Qui Nguyen (co-writer Raya and the Last Dragon), with Roy Conli (Oscar-winning Big Hero 6Tangled) producing Strange World is in theaters now.

Sadly, Disney’s rush to bring Strange World to Disney+ soon after its theatrical release is likely due to the film’s poor performance at the box office. According to analystsStrange World could lose $100 million at cinemas. However, I believe this is because of something other than the film’s quality. Advertising for Strange World has been minimal in the lead-up to its release, and parents are still concerned about bringing their children to packed movie theaters during an ongoing public health crisis. Then there’s the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever factor. Everyone is still flocking to see Marvel‘s latest superhero epic, leaving films like Strange World in the breeze. Remember, animated films don’t always put butts in seats. It’s about timing, reach, and crushing the competition.

Will you be watching Strange World when it comes to Disney+ on December 23? I’ve already added this news to my Google calendar. This year will be a Strange World and Glass Onion Christmas at the Seigh household. Ho ho ho!

In addition to revealing the steaming Strange World‘s steaming debut, Disney also shared new key art for the film. You can check the new poster out below:
