Suicide Squad cast is official: Tom Hardy, Will Smith, Jared Leto, and more!

Looks like DC Comics, Warner Bros, and David Ayer didn’t have to whittle down their dream cast, instead bringing practically every name linked to SUICIDE SQUAD on board together. This represents the biggest cast for a superhero film since, well, THE AVENGERS.

Today, Warner Bros officially announced the cast of SUICIDE SQUAD will be comprised of Will Smith as Deadshot, Jared Leto as Joker, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, and Tom Hardy as Rick Flagg. Jai Courtney and Cara Delevinge will also appear in the film as Boomerang and Enchantress. No announcement was made as to if Amanda Waller has been cast for the film, but Variety reports Oprah Winfrey is WB’s first choice followed by Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer. There are still ongoing talks for Jesse Eisenberg to appear as Lex Luthor in the movie.

WB president David Silverman did issue this statement about the casting announcement.

“The Warner Bros. roots are deep on this one David Ayer returns to the studio where he wrote Training Day and brings his incredible ability to craft multidimensional villains to this iconic DC property with a cast of longtime Warner collaborators Will Smith and Tom Hardy, and other new and returning favorites: Margot, Jared, Jai and Cara. We look forward to seeing this terrific ensemble, under Ayer’s amazing guidance, give new meaning to what it means to be a villain and what it means to be a hero.”

Specific plot details are likely going to be kept under wraps, but this is an amazing line-up that not only rivals GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, which is the film many of us have been comparing SUICIDE SQUAD to in terms of scope and play in the rest of the cinematic universe, but with such top acting talent, this movie now rivals even the biggest Marvel film for ambition and pedigree.

SUICIDE SQUAD begins filming next year for a August 5, 2016 release.
